Dependent on the end user, either domestic or contract curtains, can be covered by just a few machines.

Single Needle

The basic single needle lockstitch, or a single needle lockstitch with compound feed and walking feet and lastly an Overlock.  Of course, for the large producer automatic machines for producing pinch pleats, or wide gauge twin needle machines for attaching header tape can be supplied.

The basic lockstitch from the Brother range is more than adequate to cope with the type of materials used within the domestic curtain/soft furnishings market, and provided the user is guided into correctly setting the machine for the material being sewn, will provide years of trouble free sewing.

Combine this with the availability of inexpensive, easy to change, specialised parts and make piping, ruffling or elasticating, a problem of the past.

Those looking to manufacture for the contract market should be looking to spend a bit extra and purchase a machine that has the facility of compound feed ( needle feed ) and alternating pressers ( walking feet ).
The Seiko STH will pay back its owner time and time again, effortlessly coping with difficult materials and almost anything that is presented to it.

The next step up, suggested for manufacturers of theatre curtains or similar products is either the Seiko LSW or the Brother B897.  The engineering and general specifications of these machines, mean they are able to cope easily with the heavier weights of materials and the sheer size of such products.  Again, correctly configured, they will provide maximum production levels and years of service.

Overlocks

Available in three main formats, three thread, four thread, or five thread, the three and five being the most predominant.  The three thread machine being used primarily for neatening and securing the edges to prevent fraying, and the five thread with its independent line of stitching, being used for making up, providing a secure and neat edge.  Other variants of overlocks commonly used, are those that can insert elastic, for loose covers, insert piping or automatically create a ruffle as in the case of decorative table cloths.  Dowlings sewing machines recommend, and are pleased to offer machines from the Brother range, that have the versatility for most materials and applications, and a trusted reputation.
